It’s that time of year again. Now that Halloween and bonfire night have been and gone, your kids will soon be turning their minds to Christmas, and all that lovely time off from school. Perhaps it’s a bit early to be thinking about the holidays, but it’s never too early to start brainstorming ways to keep your energetic kids entertained. Take a look at these suggestions if you’re after some winter suitable inspiration!
Play in the snow
Is it wishful thinking to hope for snow? Possibly. But if that fluffy white stuff does fall from the sky, you’ll have an arsenal of snow-based fun to keep your kids entertained. From creating snow angels, to snowball fights, there’s endless entertainment in your own back garden for free. You could even build a snowman - or have a competition to see who can build the best one!
Paper snowflakes
If the weather variety doesn’t grace your garden this year, there’s always the arts and crafts version to have fun with. Grab safety scissors and spare paper and get your kids to design their very own snowflakes. Use them to decorate your house to get in the Christmas mood, or even save them for your tree.
Ice skating
Get in the spirit of winter by taking your kids to your nearest ice skating rink! Fun for all ages, you can take to the ice as a family, and teach your little ones how to skate. There are pop-up ice rinks across the UK throughout December for the Christmas season, so you can treat your kids to a family day out.
Bird feeding
Encourage a love of the outdoors and wildlife by getting your kids into bird feeding. Not sure how to get started? Our friends at Happy Beaks have got some helpful tips for you. Fill up those feeders and put them somewhere in your garden where your kids will be able to watch the feathered visitors from the comfort of your own home! You could even create a birdy bingo to see which garden birds pay your feeders a visit.
Film marathon
For those colder and wetter days where you’d rather not go outside in the dank and dark, turn the day into some film fun. Pick a few winter favourites, prep that popcorn, and snuggle down under layers of blankets for a movie marathon with the family. The perfect excuse to watch Christmas films!
Winter walks
If you’d rather be out in the fresh air this winter, why not take your kids for a walk along some woodland trails? Encourage them to actively participate by doing a winter scavenge hunt, to see what wildlife they can spot along the walk. Or give orienteering a try to teach them basic map reading skills! Bring a picnic along and enjoy a fun family day out.
Board games
Trying to avoid the screens this winter? Board games will provide endless fun for your family as a technology-free alternative. From classics such as Monopoly and Cluedo, to modern games like 5 Second Rule, or a spot of Articulate, the possibilities are endless! Your kids will love spending quality time together with something more interactive.
